The Teaching Hospital Peradeniya is one of the premier tertiary care hospitals in the country, located in the Central Province, along the Kandy-Colombo highway opposite the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya. Sirimavo Bandaranaike Specialized Children’s Hospital is located adjacent to the TH Peradeniya.

The Central Province, situated in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and having an area of 5,674 km2 is the primary patient catchment area of our hospital. The population of the Central Province is 2.4 million and it consists of the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale Districts. The ethnic composition of the Province is as follows; Sinhalese (65%), Tamils (65%), and the Moors (65%).

TH Peradeniya was donated by the Japanese government to the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka, in August 1980. Since then, the hospital has been administered by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. The services of the hospital are free of charge, in keeping with the free health policy of the Government of Sri Lanka.The Dental Teaching Hospital Peradeniya also falls under the administrative purview of the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya.

From its inception, the hospital has served as a secondary and tertiary care center in the Central Province. We extend our specialized services to patients from North Central, Northwestern, Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces as well.

Our hospital’s current bed strength is 1000. We treat about 80,000 in-patients and approximately 350,000 patients in our outpatients department annually. Additionally, about 300,000 patients receive medical care from clinics at our hospital annually.

TH Peradeniya provides a comprehensive healthcare service that consists of many disciplines. In order to complement those services, our hospital is equipped with ancillary facilities. We have a fully equipped laboratory, a special baby care unit, an accident and emergency unit, a physiotherapy unit, EEG and EMG services, an ECG department, an institution drug store and dispensaries and a diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy unit. The hospital has a 10 bedded main ICU, a 3 bed dental ICU, a neonatal ICU and a 4 bed toxicology ICU.

We train medical students of the adjacent Medical Faculty of the University of Peradeniya. Our hospital regularly receives intern medical officers (doctors) from the Ministry of Health for training.

We have been a well-recognized training centre of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo for a long period of time. We train postgraduate medical trainees (Registrars and Senior Registrars) of Surgery, Medicine, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedics, Haematology, Microbiology, Pathology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Sport Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.
