Introduction
The sports medicine unit in Teaching Hospital Peradeniya was established as one of the first units in Sri Lanka under the patronage of Dr. H. Suraweera consultant orthopedic surgeon. Since then the unit has rendered its services to athletes from school to international levels. Apart from treating athletes, we serve the general public in living a healthy life style.
Services Provided
- Issue Pre-participation evaluation and pre-event certificates for the athletes.
- Major sports event coverage with emergency care.
- Sports and Exercise-related injury prevention, injury management, and coordination of rehabilitation process util return to play.
- Athlete profiling, advice and guidance on performance enhancement, conditioning, and sports nutrition.
- Educating on ergogenic aids and anti-doping laws for the athletes and supporting staff.
- Helping to achieve needed extreme physiological conditions related to the sport.
- Advice on living a healthy lifestyle by promoting regular exercise.
- Exercise prescription for noncommunicable diseases.
In addition to the services as mentioned above, we hold seminars and workshops to support health staff members’ ongoing medical education. Additionally, we promote exercise, teaching first aid, and reducing sports injuries in public schools and institutions. To advance sports and exercise medicine in Sri Lanka, we carry out clinical audits and research.
